1. 槟城日本盆舞节 – Penang Bon Odori Festival

The Bon Odori Festival, also known as the Japanese Ghost Festival, is almost similar to the Chinese Ching Ming Festival. It is a day to worship the ancestors and summon their souls to come back and dance together. Since many Japanese have moved to Penang, large-scale Bon Odori Festival celebrations are held every year.

Other than a series of Japanese dance performances, you can find dozens of food stalls here, such as Takoyaki and sushi.

2. Georgetown Festival

The Georgetown Festival, one of the most promising Asian art events by the New York Times, has entered its 9th year this 2018 and will be held from August 4th to September 2nd and quickly become a gather place for art lovers.

During the Georgetown Festival, people will be able to experience the best local and international performances, art exhibitions and creative activities to experience the different Penang. Fees are subject to the activities, some of them are free of charge.

3. Project Occupy Beach Street

Since the Penang government has been promoting the concept of bicycle tourism in recent years to reduce traffic jam and air pollution, a few streets in Georgetown have been setted as car-free day at certain time on Sunday, such as Beach Street, Church Street, Bishop Street and so on. Limited to pedestrians and bicycles only.

4. Penang International Food Festival

7. Nine Emperor Gods’ Festival

The birth of the Nine Emperor God is one of the important events in Penang. It is a nine-day Taoist celebration beginning on the eve of 9th lunar month of the Chinese calendar, the believers will adhere to a strict vegetarian diet, and the last day is the most grand send-off ceremony. Other than the traditional dharma team and the lion dance show, a variety of floats are also one of the highlights of the entire parade. In addition, believers will walk along with fresh yellow flowers, joss stick and candle to send-off the Nine Emperor God.
